The Bunga Laurel is a product and chemical tanker operated by the Malaysian shipping company Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC). The ship entered service at the end of 2010. It sails under the Panamanian flag .

history

The ship was under the hull number on the S-7038 Shipyard Fukuoka Shipbuilding Co. in Nagasaki , Japan , built. The keel was laid on August 24, the launch on December 4, 2009, the ship was completed on April 22, 2010.

The ship is operated by the Malaysian shipping company MISC. It is managed by Eaglestar, a company belonging to the MISC group.

The ship was the first in a series of six tankers of the same construction that were delivered to the MISC shipping company between 2010 and 2012.

The ship was attacked by Somali pirates on January 20, 2011 in the Arabian Sea around 260  nautical miles east of Masira , an island off the coast of Oman . On board the ship, which had loaded lubricating oil and ethylene dichloride and was on a voyage to Singapore , were 23 Filipino seamen . The crew switched off the drive and cut off the power supply to make the ship incapable of maneuvering. She could escape from the pirates in a shelter and make an emergency call. Thereupon the Bunga Mas Lima of the Malaysian Navy, which was located in the sea area as part of "Operation Fajar" as part of the multinational military operation against piracy in the Gulf of Aden , set course for the ship, which they kept for safety two hours before the pirate attack had accompanied on the journey through the Arabian Sea.

The soldiers overpowered seven pirates who were aboard the Bunga Laurel . Eleven other pirates who were on another ship in the vicinity, from which the attack on the tanker had been started, surrendered. The pirates who were overwhelmed on board the tanker were arrested. The ship then continued its voyage to Singapore.

The pirates were brought to Malaysia and tried there. In September 2013, she was sentenced to several years in prison.

Technical specifications
