Burchard Harbart (also: Burchhardus Harbardus ; born October 11, 1546 in Buchholz ; † February 18, 1614 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of Martin Harbart and his wife Anna, daughter of the citizen in Konitz Andreas Michaelis, had attended the school in his hometown, where he demonstrated a particularly bright mind. So in 1564 he was employed as a teacher at the school. Then his parents sent him to Danzig, where he only stayed six months because the plague was rampant in Danzig. When he returned home, both parents died too, so that his guardians sent him to the University of Königsberg in 1565 . Here David Voit , Matthias Stoius (1526–1583) and Petrus Sickius (1530–1588) were his teachers.

In 1566, with a scholarship from the City Council of Konitz, he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he gave lectures by Heinrich Salmuth , Victorius Strigel (1524–1569), Joachim Camerarius the Elder , Wolfgang Meurer , Leonhard Lycius (also Wolf; around 1500–1570) and Valentin Taw (1531–1575) visited. Under the guidance of these teachers, he became a Baccalaurus in 1567 and a Master of Philosophy in 1570. After completing further theological studies in Leipzig, Harbart became administrator of the Prussian scholarships at the Leipzig University in 1572. In 1575 he became a member of the small prince's college, was accepted into the philosophical faculty in 1578, became its dean in 1579, and in 1580 was given the fourth theological professorship.

In order to have the necessary academic degrees, he had acquired a baccalaureate in theology in 1581, a licentiate in theology in 1582 and a doctorate in theology in 1588 . As a representative of Lutheran orthodoxy , Herbart was also involved in the disputes between Gnesiolutherans and Philippists in 1592. Also in 1592 he took over a canonical in Meißen and in 1594 became inspector of the electoral scholarships and inspector of the three electoral princely schools in Grimma, Meißen and Schulpforte. In the same year he rose to the third professorship and in 1595 was a visitor to the electoral state schools. Herbart also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leipzig University. He was several times dean of the theological faculty and in the winter semester of 1590 and 1602 rector of the alma mater .

Burchard Harbart was buried in Leipzig on February 23.
