The still unfortified castle complex was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Mackenzell, first mentioned in 1146. In 1253 the castle was fortified with walls and ramparts by Prince Abbot Heinrich IV von Erthal .

In 1276 the castle was destroyed as a robber baron's nest by the Fulda prince abbot Bertho IV von Bimbach . Nothing has been preserved from the former castle complex.
