Bychawa [ bɨˈxava ] is a town in the Lubelski powiat of the Lublin Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name .

geography

The city is located about 25 kilometers south of the voivodeship capital Lublin .

history

The first written mention of the place comes from 1325. The village was the seat of the parish of St. Peter and Paul ( św. Piotra i Pawła ) and belonged to the estates of the Dołegów family . 1537 the town was granted by Sigismund I the city charter by Magdeburg rights conferred. In 1639 the church of John the Baptist was consecrated. During the third partition of Poland , the city became part of Austria in 1795. In 1809 Bychawa became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 part of Congress Poland . Bychawa lost its town charter in 1869 when Tsar Alexander II reduced the number of towns on Polish territory in response to the January uprising . In 1906 the Bychawa Voluntary Fire Brigade was founded, which has provided fire protection and general aid ever since. After the end of the First World War , the place became part of the re-established Poland. In September 1939, Bychawa was occupied by the Wehrmacht as part of the attack on Poland . A ghetto for Jews was set up right at the beginning of the occupation. The ghetto was dissolved in the summer of 1942, and the approximately 2,500 members of the Jewish community lost their lives. In July 1944, the Armia Krajowa liberated the settlement as part of their Aktion Burza ( Akcja Burza ) before the Red Army invaded. 1956 the place became the seat of Powiat Bychawski . Two years later the place was given city rights again. Due to the administrative reform in Poland Bychawa lost the seat of the powiat in 1975 .
