The Coligação Democrática Unitária ( CDU ; German Democratic Unity Coalition ) is a Portuguese electoral alliance made up of Portuguese Communists (PCP), Greens (PEV) and the political movement Intervenção Democrática (ID). Through its member parties, it has a communist , green and eco-socialist orientation.
history
The Partido Comunista Português (PCP), the Partido Ecologista Os Verdes (PEV) and the Intervenção Democrática movement founded the electoral alliance in order to have better chances against the Portuguese socialists who have been strong since the Carnation Revolution and to guarantee the Greens a participation in the Portuguese parliament with the name Coligação Democrática Unitária in 1987. In the same year the electoral alliance took part in the by-elections for the European Parliament and the Portuguese parliamentary elections .
Since the founding of the electoral alliance, the parties have never stood individually again. The Communist Party is the leading one within the alliance and also has the majority of the seats in parliament. Nevertheless, the Greens always get at least two places. Within the Portuguese parliament ( Assembleia da República ), the CDU is treated like a parliamentary group, the two parties usually act as one, but are always mentioned separately in official publications. Within the CDU, the ID no longer plays a role at all.
