De 4/4 is the serial designation for meter-gauge luggage railcars of the Chemins de fer du Jura (CJ) with the numbers 401 to 403. When they were commissioned in 1952 and 1953, they were designated as Fe 4/4 401-403.

Railcar No. 403 was converted to the De 4/4 II 411 in 1986 . From the other two vehicles, the two twin-power locomotives Gem 4/4 401 and 12 were created in 2010 , with No. 12 going to the Meiringen-Innertkirchen-Bahn (MIB).

history

De 4/4 with carriages B 761–763 between Pré-Petitjean and La Combe. The De 4/4 I has been too slow for passenger trains since the 1970s.

After its establishment, the CJ unify the technical standards of most of its lines so that a 74.3 km long continuous meter gauge network was created, which with 1,500 volts DC is operated. To simplify operations, the Saignelégier – Glovelier line was converted from normal to meter gauge. The already existing electric locomotives BCe 2/4 and Ge 2/2 were only used for service trains .

The Swiss Industrial Society (SIG) and the Société Anonyme des Ateliers de Sécheron (SAAS) supplied three very powerful De 4/4 I 401-403 luggage railcars in 1952/53 for guiding freight trains and snow plow journeys on the narrow-gauge network . Since they were delivered in front of the BDe 4/4 I passenger railcars , they were used on the Saignelégier – La Chaux-de-Fonds and Tavannes – Le Noirmont routes for the colludation and inauguration runs.

technology

When building the De 4/4 I, basically the same construction principles were used as for the BDe 4/4 I built at the same time . In contrast to the passenger railcars, the traction motors are cooled with external ventilation. The bogies are equipped with leaf springs instead of torsion bar springs . A multiple control allows remote control by the control car Bt 701–706. Multiple traction is also possible with the BDe 4/4 I 601–608 passenger railcars. The De 4/4 have been painted red since delivery.

Changes

In 1960/61 the metal letters "CJ" on the side walls were replaced by glued logos. In 1962 the luggage railcars were given the designation De 4/4. In 1962/63 the ZST-90 train protection system was installed and the compressed air whistles were replaced by macrophones .

After the top speed of the BDe 4/4 was increased to 70 km / h in 1971, the De 4/4 were too slow to drive the now accelerated passenger trains. Their missions were limited to freight trains.

The Flug- und Fahrzeugwerke Altenrhein (FFA) built the De 4/4 II 411 with the box of the De 4/4 403 in 1986. Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC) supplied new electrical equipment and SIG new bogies, both of the same design as the BDe 4/4 II 601-604 delivered in 1985. The new multiple control, suitable for the BDe 4/4 II, allows remote control by the ABt 711–714 and BDt 721–722 control cars delivered in 1985. The red paint was retained during the renovation.

Thanks to the greater power and the higher speed, the vehicle can be used again in passenger trains. The remaining De 4/4 401 and 402 luggage railcars were now called De 4/4 I.

Conversion to Gem 4/4 401 and 12

In 2010, the CJ converted the De 4/4 I 401 and 402 into Gem 4/4 401 and 12 twin-power locomotives in its workshop in Tramelan . A Scania - diesel engine drives a generator to which the power to the traction motors and auxiliary equipment supplies. The Gem 4/4 can continue to run in multiple and remote control with the associated railcars and control cars from 1953. The two-engine locomotive can draw its electricity from the diesel group and the other motor vehicle from the catenary .

The conversion of the De 4/4 I 402 to the Gem 4/4 12 was commissioned by the Meiringen-Innertkirchen-Bahn (MIB). After commissioning and operational testing on the CJ network, the vehicle was handed over to the MIB on May 31, 2011. Because the overhead line voltage of the MIB is only 1200 volts instead of 1500 volts for the CJ, the output of the Gem 4/4 12 is somewhat reduced in its new area of application.
