Cachua (pronunciation ˈqɑt͡ʃwa with voiceless uvular plosive or ˈχɑt͡ʃwa with voiceless uvular fricative ) - Hispanized from Quechua or Aymara Qachwa ( Chanka-Quechua , Huallaga-Quechua ), Qatswa ( Ancash-Quechua ), Qhachwa ( Qusaraqu) or Qullaw Qhaswa ( AMLQ - spelling for Cusco ), also Qhashwa - is a traditional dance that is common in the central and southern Andes of Peru and Bolivia .

music

Similar to the Huaino , the Cachua is played in two- four time, with a quarter note alternating with two eighth notes in a bar, typically a quarter note at the beginning of a bar and then two eighth notes, in the next bar first two eighth notes and then another quarter note (i.e. four eighth notes and two quarter notes in a row, but "across measures"). The melodies are traditionally pentatonic . Traditionally, flutes ( quena , panpipes ) and drums are common instruments, but stringed instruments such as charango or guitar can also be used. It can also be sung, with pairs of verses being repeated.

dance

The cachua is a circle dance with couples , in which the men hit their shoes and the women turn on their own axis. The occasions can vary and range from engagements to celebrating Christmas .

history

The Cachua goes back to the time before the Spanish conquest of Peru and was already danced in the Inca times . Diego González Holguín named 1608 in his Vocabulario de la lengua general del Perú under the keyword Kachua (in other places Cachua ) a "dance in which one holds hands". As a pre-Columbian indigenous tradition, the Cachua is more closely associated with the Quechua and Aymara cultures than other musical genres .
