Caesar Meister (born November 20, 1927 in Hamburg ; † December 20, 2017 ) was a German SPD politician and senator of the building authorities in Hamburg. In addition, he was a long-standing member of the board of the non-profit building cooperative Bergedorf-Bille eG.

Life

Meister was born in Hamburg St. Pauli. He got to know the housing shortage early on: at times, the family found accommodation in an allotment arbor, and water had to be fetched from a tap. After attending elementary and commercial school, Caesar Meister only completed a shortened commercial apprenticeship, as he was called up for military service.

In 1948, the 21-year-old was one of the founders of the Bille settlement and building cooperative , the aim of which was to build apartments for bombed-out Hamburgers and refugees. The supervisory board mainly consisted of workers from the Bergedorfer Eisenwerk . The Bergedorf district supported residential construction by awarding heritable building plots and a loan. In 1960, the merged Bille with the cooperative Bergedorf for -profit cooperative Bergedorf-Bille eG . Caesar Meister became board member and managing director.

Its political base is in the SPD district of Hamburg-Bergedorf . From 1951 to 1961 he represented his party as a member of the Bergedorf district assembly . From 1966 to 1978 he was a member of the Hamburg parliament . On April 28, 1966, Mayor Herbert Weichmann appointed him President of the Building Authority, which he was in charge of until April 30, 1974. In accordance with the Hamburg constitution, Meister's mandate was suspended during his tenure as senator. He complained that non-profit housing construction and urban redevelopment were becoming more and more difficult in the Hanseatic city, as individual landowners hindered him with years of legal contradictions.

In 1978, Meister left the after-work parliament. He returned to the board of the Bergedorf building cooperative and retired in 2000.
