Cahuana is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Cahuana is the central place of the canton of Cahuana in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sabaya in the province of Sabaya . The village is located on the Bolivian Altiplano at an altitude of 3761  m and is framed by three mountain peaks that rise more than a thousand meters from the plain of Cahuana: the Tata Sabaya (5430 m) in the southwest, the Cerro Pariani (5077 m) in the Southeast, and the Cerro Pumiri (4805 m) in the northeast near the village of Sabaya .

A few kilometers north of the village, the Río Sabaya flows in an easterly direction , whose water, which flows only occasionally over the course of the year, flows thirty kilometers further downstream into the Salar de Coipasa salt lake .

The climate in the region is semi-arid , the annual precipitation is only 200 mm (see climate diagram Sabaya). From April to November there is a dry season with monthly values ​​of less than 10 mm of precipitation, the wet season in summer is short and the rain is not very productive. The annual average temperature is almost 7 ° C without significant fluctuations in the course of the year, but with strong daily fluctuations in temperature and frequent changes in frost .

The vegetation in the region corresponds to the semi-arid puna . It is treeless and mainly consists of thorn bushes , grasses , succulents and cushion plants . It is used economically as a llama , alpaca and sheep pasture .

Transport network

Cahuana is located at a distance of 205 kilometers by road southwest of Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro, the largely unpaved road Ruta 12 leads 189 kilometers in a south-westerly direction via Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Sabaya and on to Pisiga on the Chilean border. From Sabaya a dirt road leads west, after sixteen kilometers reaches Cahuana and then continues to the villages of San Antonio de Pitacollo and La Rivera .

Due to the historically grown population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the Municipio Sabaya 62.9 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
