View over the village to the south to Vjosa and Selenica on the other side of the river

Cakran is located in the wide valley on the central reaches of the Vjosa , around four kilometers north of the river at around 65  m above sea level. A. . The first hills of the Mallakastra rise on the northeastern edge of the village . The Mali i Gurit të Zi, which rises just above the village, reaches a height of 513  m above sea level. A. , further east the hills rise to over 600 meters. Today there is a Türbe on the Mali i Gurit të Zi .

The former municipality of Cakran used to belong to eleven other villages: Cakran i ri (adjacent, part of Cakran until 1992, then Cakran 2 for a while), Floq , Buzëmadh in the south, Humbar in the southwest on the river, Varibop to the north, Vjosa a little more further north-west, Kreshpan north-west of Cakran on the road to Fier, Gjorgos , Vreshtas and Gorishova in the south-west and Gjon south of the latter on the Vjosa.

In the past, Cakran was practically a dead end: A simple driveway led from Fier almost 20 kilometers through the hills into the village. There was no road further down the Vjosatal, nor was there a connection across the river to Selenica . The ways further up the Vjosatal and from there into the Mallakastra were bad. The new route of the Rruga shtetërore SH4 , opened in summer 2012, connects Cakran with Levan on the lower reaches of the Vjosa and with Tepelena in southern Albania. The main road to southern Albania runs through the plain between the village and the river.

Hill Qyteza on which the prehistoric settlement Mashkjeza was on the edge of Cakran

The region has a long history. At Cakran, traces of a Neolithic settlement have been found, which was dated to the end of the fourth millennium BC. Stone axes, flint and ceramics found in Cakran are now on display in the Fier Archaeological Museum. On the northeast edge of the village are the remains of the hill settlement Mashkjeza from the Bronze and Iron Ages . From the settlement, which is also called Qyteza, there are still enclosing walls with an access gate. It was inhabited from the 16th to 4th centuries BC and then again in the Middle Ages . Cakran is located on the connecting routes between Apollonia and Byllis and Antigoneia . After the abandonment of the Mashkjeza settlement, the Gurëzeza settlement was built much higher on the prominent hill above the place, with which the communication routes could be controlled. The first complex was still quite small, the ancient Illyrian city wall covered an area of 27 hectares, in late antiquity only a very small area was protected. The fortification may be the Illyrian city of Eugenium . Beside the walls there are rich traces of an urban life, for which the hill was terraced. The remains of a Zeus temple have been identified. There is a necropolis north of the city . The ruins of a church with a tower were also found on the mountain. In 1978 a treasure with 2500 bronze coins from the cities of the region was found.

In 1908 the first Mallakastra school was opened in Cakran.

Cakran is one of 100 villages in which the Albanian government wants to specifically promote rural tourism . The three historical sites and an old stone house in the village are protected as national cultural monuments. But there is no tourist development of the sights.
