Camille de Toledo , real name Alexis Mital (born June 25, 1976 in Lyon , France ) is a French writer. He is also a videographer, musician and photographer.

biography

Toledo studied history and political science at the Institut d'Études Politiques in Paris , as well as law and literature at the University of Paris VII Diderot, where he did a doctorate in comparative literature under Dominique Rabaté on the motif of dizziness (vertige) in the works of Cervantes , Jorge Luis Borges , Claudio Magris , Edouard Glissant , William Faulkner , Fernando Pessoa , Herman Melville and WG Sebald .

In 2004 he received the Villa Médicis scholarship .

In 2005 he began writing " Strates" , which is described as " fictional archeology ". Of four books intended for this tetralogy, two have been published: L'Inversion de Hieronymus Bosch (Eng. Die Inversion von Hieronymus Bosch, Editions Verticales 2005), which was published a few years later, in 2011 under the title En época de monstruos y catástrofes ( Ger. In the epoch of monsters and catastrophes) as a Spanish translation (Ed. Alpha Decay, translation by Juan Asis) and Vies et mort d'un terroriste américain (Ger. Life and Death of an American Terrorist, Editions Verticales, 2007).

Toledo is also the author of essays in which different writing styles and genres flow into one another: autobiographical narrative, criticism, flash fiction, including Le Hêtre et le Bouleau (German: The beech and the birch, 2009) and L'Adieu au 20e siècle (German. Farewell to the 20th Century, 2002). He also published in 2008 at the French university publisher Puf an answer in essay form to the manifesto called Pour une littérature-monde en français (dt. For a French World Literature), which in March 2007 on the occasion of the festival Etonnants voyageur of Saint-Malo has been published. This pamphlet called Visiter le Flurkistan ou les illusions de la littérature-monde (Eng. Visit to Flurkistan or the Illusions of World Literature) advocates a philosophically committed literature that is freed from all directly objectivistic, naturalistic or realistic constraints, and fundamentally falls under artificial archeology rather than under the "real" and "authentic" travel experience. His works are translated in Spain, Italy, Germany and the United States. Toledo is a regular contributor to the philosophy, art and literature journal Pylône.

In the spring of 2008, he and Maren Sell founded the Société européenne des auteurs (SEA, European Authors' Society) to promote a culture of translation across all linguistic boundaries. With this network, which is supported by authors and intellectuals such as Bruno Latour , Hélène Cixous , Juan Goytisolo and Mathias Énard , Toledo is developing a "poetics of interlinguality" ( poétique de l'entre-des-langues ), the "translation as language" , with the aim of "de-nationalizing the literary and political field". He founds the platform for collaborative translation Glaub.org and the Finnegans List project .

In March 2011 his fragmentary novel Vies pøtentielles (German: Potential CVs) will be published by Seuil. According to Dominique Rabaté, this is a biographical and literary turning point.

L'Inquiétude d'être au monde will be published by Editions Verdier at the beginning of 2012 . It is a long poem, a kind of song, in which the author traces the state of Europe at the beginning of the 21st century and, reflexively and poetically, thematizes the possible meaning of a "black myth", the massacre of Utøya .

In March 2013 he wrote the libretto and created the videos in the Salle Pleyel for the opera La Chute de Fukuyama (The Fall of Fukuyama) about the attacks of September 11, 2001, composed by Grégoire Hetzel .

In 2014 Toledo undertook the Central Europe project, which consists of "Narrations in Art" and which can be seen in changing forms in Hall 14 of the Leipziger Spinnerei for over a year. Here he develops a plastic and material writing, a continuation of his literary writing in an exhibition space. For example, in March 2015 he shows the exhibitions "The Potential Exhibition", in April – May a reflection on violence and history, "History Reloaded", and finally a work on the relationship between utopia and dystopia, "Europa-Eutopia".

In 2019, together with the Pôle Art et Urbanisme (Polau), he founded a new "potential institution" in Tours: the Auditions du parlement de Loire, in order to stimulate reflection with leading intellectuals on how natural and geographical conditions such as rivers, Seas and entire ecosystems can be given or recognized the status of legal person and how institutions of justice between different species can be established.

Together with the École urbaine de Lyon, the Association Arty Party and the fête du livre de Bron, he has also curated and moderated a series as part of a residency from January to June 2020, which deals with the term "investigation" or "investigation" ( enquête ) in art, literature, and the cultural and social sciences: Enquêter, enquêter, mais pour élucider quel crime? He teaches in the Atelier des écritures contemporaines of the ENSAV (La Cambre) in Brussels.
