The Mattamy National Cycling Center ( French Center national du cyclisme Mattamy ) is a covered cycling track in the Canadian city of Milton , Province of Ontario . The Velodrome is the first closed velodrome in Canada that meets the international standards of the World Cycling Association UCI and on which official international competitions can take place.
history
The Mattamy National Cycling Center officially opened on January 9, 2015; it houses the Cisco Milton Velodrome . The sports facility was built for the track cycling competitions of the Pan American Games 2015 , which will be held from July 10th to 26th in Toronto , 50 kilometers away . Then the Parapan American Games races took place in the Velodrome .
The Cisco Milton Velodrome has a 250-meter-long wooden track made of Siberian spruce with a curve superelevation of 42 degrees. 1500 seats are available, which were expanded to 3000 during the Pan American Games. The first competition on the cycling track was the Canadian Track Cycling Championships in 2014 (!), Which were originally supposed to take place the previous autumn, but had to be postponed because the construction was not completed on time.
After the cycling track for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal was demolished in 1989, Canadian track cyclists had neither a closed track nor one that met international standards for 25 years. So far, North America has only had the only corresponding track, the Velo Sports Center in Los Angeles , which was also used by Canadian athletes for training. Originally, the track was supposed to be bought for the Pan American Games in Hamilton in 2014 , but this failed due to funding.
After the Games, the Mattamy National Cycling Center - Home of Canadian Cycling will serve as the home of Cycling Canada, the Canadian cycling association and national training center. The center can also be used for other sports such as volleyball and basketball .
In September 2016, Cycling Canada applied to host three World Cup races at the Mattamy National Cycling Center in three consecutive seasons 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20.
Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame
A Canadian Cycling Hall of Fame was also set up in the Velodrome, and the first nine members were accepted at the inauguration in 2015.
