Brian Walton (cyclist)
Brian Clifford Walton (born December 18, 1965 in Ottawa ) is a retired Canadian cyclist .
Brian Walton was one of Canada's most successful and versatile racing cyclists from the late 1980s to the 1990s, on the road and on the track . He is considered to be the most important cyclist from British Columbia to date .
Success on the road
In 1987, Walton was Canadian champion in the amateur road race . In 1988 he started at the Olympic Games in Seoul and was 13th in the team time trial and 33rd in the road race; that same year he won the Tour de Gastown and finished second on the United Texas Tour . Then he became a professional . In 1989 he won the British Milk Race and in 1991 the Bayern Tour . He finished second on the Herald Sun Tour in 1993 and won the Tour of Willamette overall rankings in 1994 . In 1995 he won the road race at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata . In 1997 and 1998 he was Canadian runner-up in the individual time trial and in 1998 in road racing. The following year he won the gold medal in road racing at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg . In 2000 he finished third again at the Canadian Road Championship. In total, he won ten national titles.
Success on the track
In 1993 and 1994, Walton was the Canadian championship points race on the track . At the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria , he won the bronze medal in scratch and at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta the silver medal in the points race; four years later he was at the Games in Sydney in ninth in this discipline. Several times he also took top places in races of the Track Cycling World Cup .
Honors and professional
In 2006 Brian Walton was inducted into the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame . Since retiring from active cycling, he has been working as a cycling trainer. He lives and works in Philadelphia .
