Candelaria is a municipality ( municipio ) in Colombia in the department of Atlántico .

Candelaria is located 60 km south of Barranquilla near the Colombian Caribbean coast at an altitude of m above sea level. NN . The annual average temperature is 32 ° C. Candelaria borders Sabanalarga to the north, Campo de la Cruz to the south, Ponedera to the east and Manatí to the west .

The municipality of Candelaria has 12,576 inhabitants, of which 9720 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Candelaria was founded in 1681 by the brothers Domingo and Manuel Caraballo who were cattle breeders. The first name of the place was Corral de Piedra and later Tasajera . Candelaria got its current name around 1800 after a Spanish monk brought an image of the Virgin of Candelaria to the town.
