geography

expansion

The 4500 hectare , according to another source 6000 hectare large Tanbi Wetland Complex is located west of the mouth of the Gambia River in the Atlantic Ocean . In the north the area extends to Toll Point and extends northwest over Cape Creek to near Cape St. Mary .

To the northwest, the area is bounded by the island of St. Mary's Island , on which the capital Banjul is located. The island is separated by the Oyster Creek Canal . The Denton Bridge leads over this canal to the mainland in an east-west direction. The Gambia's largest city, Serrekunda , is to the west, and Abuko and Lamin are located further south . To the southwest the area extends to Mandinari Point .

Waters

Some bodies of water that are part of the Gambia's river system flow in its dense network of canals, such as the Lamin Bolong and Daranka Bolong , which unite to form the Lamin-Daranka Channel . There are also the Mandinari Bolong , Cape Creek , Parkers Creek , Turnbull Bolong and the Chitabong Bolong .

Islands

Named islands in this area are Chitabong Island , Daranka Island and Lamin Island .

Flora and fauna

The whole area is under the influence of salt water - the so-called brackish water zone, there are numerous tangled mangroves . Numerous marsh and water birds can be observed here.
