Occurrence

Ethyl capric acid is found in beer. The compound was also found in cognac, apples , bananas , cherries , lemons , grapes , melons , pears , pineapples and other natural products. It has also been found in wine.

Extraction and presentation

Caprinsäureethylester can be prepared by esterification of decanoic acid and ethyl alcohol in the presence of hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid are recovered.

Ethyl capric acid is a flammable, difficult to ignite, colorless liquid that is practically insoluble in water. The compound has a fruity smell reminiscent of grapes (cognac). An oily, brandy odor was also reported.

Ethyl capric acid is used as a flavoring agent.
