Captain Tsubasa ( Japanese キ ャ プ テ ン 翼 , Kyaputen Tsubasa ) is a manga series by author and illustrator Yōichi Takahashi , which was published from 1981 to 1988 in Weekly Shōnen Jump . It is based around the young soccer player Tsubasa Ohzora and his dream of becoming the best soccer player in the world as well as reaching the soccer World Cup with the Japanese national soccer team . The original series deals with Tsubasa's career from his first games on the school team as a primary school student to the first international tournament in France, just before hegraduates from middle school to go to Brazil .

The manga continued in several series that were also filmed as anime . These include several television series, OVAs and movies. While the first television series in Germany was known as Die große Fußball-Stars , the film adaptation of the manga Captain Tsubasa - Road to 2002 under the title Super Kickers 2006 - Captain Tsubasa found its way onto German television on the occasion of the 2006 World Cup in Germany .

At the beginning of the series, the 11-year-old Tsubasa Ohzora moves with his family to Nankatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture , where he joins his school team, FC Nankatsu, and with them can initially win the national primary school championship. Besides Tsubasa, Ryo Ishizaki, Genzo Wakabayashi and Taro Misaki are the most important players in Nankatsu. Roberto Hongo, a former Brazilian soccer player who coached FC Nankatsu and Tsubasa, is moving to Brazil .

At the national championship for middle school students, FC Nankatsu and the Toho School, the team of Tsubasa arch-rivals Kojiro Hyuga, face each other three times in the final. In the first two years, Nankatsu's team managed to win the title, in the third year the game ended in a 4-4 draw, in which Tsubasa and Kojiro scored all the goals. The title goes to both teams.

After the end of the national championship, in addition to Tsubasa and Hyuga and some players Nankatsus and Tohos, Hikaru Matsuyama (whose team, FC Furano , was eliminated in the semi-finals) and Hiroshi Jito (from the quarter-finals) will be appointed to the U-16 team to help to compete in the junior soccer world championship in France. Since Tsubasa injured himself during the national championship, he can only play in the last preparatory game. At the finals in France, the Japanese reach the final and defeat Germany 3-2. Then Tsubasa moves to Brazil to FC Brancos and Kojiro to Italy to FC Piemont.

At the subsequent U-20 World Cup, the Japanese win the final against Brazil 3-2 thanks to a hat trick by Tsubasa. After the end of the World Cup, Tsubasa marries his youth girlfriend Sanae Nakazawa and moves to Spain.

Characters

Tsubasa Ohzora
Tsubasa ( 大 空 翼 , Ōzora Tsubasa ) is the protagonist of the series. His biggest dream is to become world soccer champion with the Japanese national team. First he played in the Nankatsu team before moving to Brazil (FC São Paulo (German version: FC Brancos)) and later to Spain (FC Barcelona (German version: FC Catalonia)). His special technique is the top spin and the overhead kick , both of which he learned from coach Roberto.
Genzo Wakabayashi
Genzo ( 若 林 源 三 , Wakabayashi Genzō ) is initially the goalkeeper of the Shutetsu school and then plays for FC Nankatsu. Origin and publication history

When the series started in Japan in the early 1980s, football was little known and not popular. The author Yoichi Takahashi decided after his visit to the Soccer World Cup in Argentina in 1978 to make the sport more popular in Japan and began to work on Captain Tsubasa .

In Japan, the first Captain Tsubasa series appeared from 1981 to 1988 in Weekly Shonen Jump published by Shueisha . The anthology edition reached 37 volumes. TV Shows

Toei Animation first produced an anime television series based on the manga, which was broadcast on the Japanese television station TV Tokyo from 1983 to 1986 and comprised a total of 128 episodes. This series was known in Germany under the title The great football stars .

When the follow-up series World Youth was released, Nippon Animation and Studio Comet produced the anime television series Captain Tsubasa J , which was broadcast on Japanese television station Fuji TV from 1993 to 1995 . The series comprises a total of 47 episodes and only tells the events of the World Youth saga from the 33rd episode onwards .

The third sequel to the manga, Captain Tsubasa - Road to 2002 , was filmed by Group TAC and Studio Madhouse and broadcast on TV Tokyo on the occasion of the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. The 52 episode anime became known in Germany under the title Super Kickers 2006 - Captain Tsubasa .

A new edition of the series has been running on TV Tokyo, TV Aichi and other channels since April 3, 2018. The original video animation Shin Captain Tsubasa was produced by CBS Sony Group Inc., Movic and Shueisha and published in 13 episodes from July 1989 to July 1990. It is the film adaptation of the last part of Captain Tsubasa -Mangas, the Junior World Championship. In 1994 a second OVA was released, Captain Tsubasa Movie 05: Saikyu no Tenki! In 1001 Comics , Tatsuya Seto describes Captain Tsubasa as "one of the most successful sports manga ever" , which triggered a "national football fever" in Japan .
