Carl Wilhelm August Blum (* 1786 in Berlin ; † July 2, 1844 in Berlin) was a German singer, stage actor, director, librettist and composer. Blum was a student of Friedrich Adam Hiller and later Antonio Salieri and was court composer at the Royal Court Opera in Berlin. In this role he made a name for himself with instrumental music and over 70 works for the stage.

Carl Blum is also often referred to as Karl Ludwig Blum in literature.

Life

Blum first appeared as an actor in Daniel Gottlieb Quandt's Society on the Rhine in 1805 , then came to Königsberg as a singer, where he studied composition under Hiller's direction, and returned to Berlin in 1810, where his first opera Claudine von Villa Bella after Goethe's play was applauded was performed. In 1817 he performed the opera Das Rosenhütchen in Vienna , which was given 39 times in succession, and in 1820, when he returned to Berlin, he was appointed court composer at the Royal Theater there. He then stayed in Paris for two years to study theater there, and after his return led for several years partly the direction of the Royal Opera and partly the direction of the Royal City Theater .

Some of his plays appeared in collected works, such as Neue Bühnenspiele 1828, Neue Theaterspiele 1830 and Theater Volume 1 - 4 1839 - 1844.

Many of his stage works are arrangements and transcriptions by well-known French and Italian composers, Blum tried to make vaudeville popular in Germany and wrote, among many others, the pieces Mirandolina after Carlo Goldoni's Locandiera , The Two Brits after Merville ( Pierre-François Camus , 1785-1853) , I'm Remaining Single and The Loud Secret According to Carlo Gozzi .

Among other things, he wrote works for guitar and music for solo guitar, including a guitar school (op. 44 as an appendix to the same). The sometimes very high level of difficulty of the works shows him as an excellent guitarist.

For the Viennese soprano Anna Pauline Milder-Hauptmann , who meanwhile worked in Berlin, Blum composed a large vocal scene (with orchestral accompaniment) for her concert tours, which became extremely popular: This "Greeting to Switzerland", which alluded directly to one of her most popular roles , which Emmeline in Joseph Weigl's Singspiel Die Schweizer Familie and at the end turns into a yodel song based on a text by Goethe , was the model for Milder when Franz Schubert was commissioned to compose his penultimate song The Shepherd on the Rock (D 965) designed in a similar multi-part system.

Carl Blum died in Berlin in 1844 at the age of 57 or 58. He was buried in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.

This leads to repeated confusion with the historian Karl Ludwig Blum , also in the library catalogs .
