Carl Eduard Güthling

Carl Eduard Güthling (born February 23, 1824 in Lengerich (Westphalia) , † April 24, 1896 in Liegnitz , Lower Silesia ) was a German classical philologist , historian and grammar school director.

Life

Carl Eduard Güthling, the son of a gatekeeper, spent his childhood in Lengerich and Paderborn , where he attended the Theodorianum high school from 1835 . After the final exam (August 24, 1843), he studied classical philology, philosophy , German studies and history at the Royal Academy in Münster from the summer semester of 1844 . He spent the winter semester of 1847/48 at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin , where he heard lectures from August Boeckh , Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse , Karl Richard Lepsius and Leopold George . On March 31, 1848, he passed the teaching examination in Münster.

At Easter 1848 Güthling was employed at the Ratsgymnasium Minden . He completed his probationary year there, was appointed assistant teacher on Easter 1849, on February 5, 1850 as a full teacher and on October 1, 1851 as senior teacher. He also worked on his doctorate . To this end, he submitted a dissertation on the historiography of Thucydides to the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen . On the basis of this work, he was awarded the title of Dr. on November 25, 1856 ( in absentia , leaving the oral examination) phil. PhD.

After a few years, Güthling left his Westphalian homeland: on October 10, 1861, he was appointed prorector and first senior teacher at the grammar school in Bunzlau ( Silesia ). He took up this position at Easter 1862. Just three years later (Easter 1865) he switched to the Evangelical Gymnasium in Lauban as director . On July 1, 1867, he was appointed director of the municipal evangelical high school in Liegnitz , which he led for 22 years. For his services he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class. After an eye disease troubled him, he retired at Easter 1889. His successor was Wilhelm Gemoll .

Carl Eduard Güthling was born with Karoline. Schmidt married. Two sons came from this marriage: the philologist and grammar school teacher Otto Güthling (1853–1931) and Carl Adolf Ernst Güthling (1859 – before 1888).

In addition to the school service, Güthling published scientific treatises on Latin literature and style, on German humanists and on the methodology of Latin teaching .
