Carl Engel von der Rabenau
Carl Engel, called Engel von der Rabenau (born October 25, 1817 in Londorf , Gießen district in Upper Hesse , † March 31, 1870 in Rödelheim , today: City of Frankfurt am Main ), was a German painter of the late Biedermeier period .
Life
Carl Engel was the youngest son of Freiherr von Rabenauschen rent master and chief administrator Carl Wilhelm Engel (1761–1826) and his wife Christine Philipine, born. Pfeiff (1780–1874), born. From 1826 to 1832 he attended a private school in Gießen and then for two years the drawing school Franz Hubert Müller in Darmstadt . From 1834 to 1836 he studied under Theodor Hildebrandt at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf , where he stood out for his "study heads". In the years 1835 to 1836 he exhibited portraits in Düsseldorf, but also discovered the genre picture The Duck's Nest of Two Boys . He then studied at the Academy in Munich until 1839 . In Munich he met the sculptor Johann Baptist Scholl , with whom he went on a trip to the Alps in 1838. In 1839 an extended study trip through southern Germany followed. In the years 1841–1842 he was based in Frankfurt am Main and in 1842 he moved to Rödelheim, where he lived until his death. On October 16, 1842, he married Anna Margarethe Rabenau from Londorf in Londorf.
Engel von der Rabenau was portrayed in 1836 by the painter Johann Peter Hasenclever in his genre painting studio scene .
