Carl Hans Wachtmeister zu Johannishus ( April 2, 1689 - March 7, 1736 ) was a Swedish count and admiral from the Wachtmeister family .

He was often confused with his cousin , Count Karl Hans Wachtmeister (1682–1731), the son of Bleckert Wachtmeister. He was also an admiral and Swedish Imperial Councilor.

Carl Hans Wachtmeister was the eldest son of Admiral Count Hans Wachtmeister zu Johannishus and his wife Sofia Louisa Ascheberg. After the death of his father in 1714, Carl Hans Wachtmeister was the heir of Johannishus Castle , the inheritance of the Wachtmeister family in Blekinge .

Wachtmeister married Countess Magdalena Ulrika Stenbock in 1714, the daughter of the royal council and Field Marshal Count Magnus Stenbock . She died giving birth to her first child in 1715. Two years later, Wachtmeister married the Baroness Sofia Dorotea Henrietta Filippina von Metsch (1699–1753), a daughter of Baron Hans Fredrik von Metsch and Juliana Sibilla von dem Knesebeck.

Military career

In 1700 Wachtmeister was appointed lieutenant . In 1704 he became first officer on the frigate Oland of the captain and later Admiral Gustaf von Psilander . On board this frigate he took part in the Battle of Orford Ness on July 28, 1704. Three years later he was promoted to captain by the Swedish Admiralty. In 1711 he was appointed Schoutby Night , this historical rank corresponded to today's Rear Admiral .

Wachtmeister had in the spring of 1715 from the Swedish King Karl XII. received orders to permanently disrupt the Danes' supply routes. He was given command of the Swedish flagship Princess Hedwig Sophia . In 1715 the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway controlled all three passages into the oceans. In the Øresund in particular , there were repeated minor skirmishes and ship captures. The Danish Admiralty put together a flotilla under the command of Admiral Gabel to destroy the Swedish fleet. After a brief captivity , Wachtmeister returned to Sweden and was appointed Vice Admiral in 1716 .

In 1719 he was appointed admiral and a little later a member of the Swedish Admiralty Council. He received the supreme command of the Swedish fleet in the eastern Baltic region and tried to stop the Russian looting in Sweden's waters. This succeeded only to a limited extent, because the Russian superiority of ships and cannons often forced the Swedes to retreat. In addition, due to their limited resources, the Swedish units were unable to carry out relief attacks against Russian ports.
