Carl Karlweis ( pseudonym since 1885), actually: Karl Weiss (born November 23, 1850 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ; † October 27, 1901 there ) was an Austrian playwright and storyteller.

Life

Karlweis had been an employee of the Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company in Graz since 1868 , and in 1869 he switched to the Carl-Ludwig-Bahn . From 1876, already active as a writer, he was the works secretary of the Graz-Köflacher Bahn , from 1891 in the general management of the Südbahngesellschaft in Vienna, chief inspector and director of the bureau for general affairs .

He wrote numerous short stories and novels, some in the Viennese dialect . With Hermann Bahr and Vinzenz Chiavacci he also wrote comedies and folk plays, which were performed especially in Vienna at the Deutsches Volkstheater and at the Vienna Volksbühne .

On November 25, 1896, he received the Raimund Prize for his folk play The Little Man .

He had been suffering from a severe stomach problem for years and wrote the last play The New Simson, which premiered on October 19, 1901 at the Deutsches Volkstheater with the participation of Franz Tewele and Helene Odilon and whose resounding success had a positive effect on Karlweis' mood during the last days of his life.

Karlweis died a few months after returning from a cure in Lovrana on October 27, 1901 in his apartment, Vienna-Wieden , Mayerhofgasse 12. He was born on the 29th of the month, with numerous representatives from literature and art, buried in the evangelical cemetery Vienna Matzleinsdorf (group 18, number 12) to rest. Of Jewish descent, he converted to Protestant faith on April 23, 1889.
