Carl Nicolaus Kähler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Nicolaus Kähler , occasionally there is also the wrong spelling: Karl Nicolaus Kähler , (born June 28, 1804 in Freienfelde , † April 3, 1871 in Altona ) was a Schleswig-Holstein pedagogue, Evangelical-Lutheran pastor , theologian and local researcher.

Life

Carl Nicolaus Kähler was born on June 28, 1804 as the son of the tenant Johann Diedrich Kähler in Freienfelde in the provost's office . He attended the Latin school in Plön and began studying philology and theology at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel in 1825 . After passing the exam with honors in Glückstadt in 1827, he became rector of the community school in Heiligenhafen in 1830 and at the same time deacon of the local church . From 1839 Kähler was pastor at the St. George and Mauritius Church in Flemhude , moved from there to Bruges in 1849 , before finally becoming the first compastor at the main church St. Trinitatis in Altona in 1855 , where he was on April 3, 1871 died.

In both Heiligenhafen and Flemhude, Kähler worked as a local researcher, as was not uncommon for pastors in his time, and was a member of the Royal Schleswig-Holstein-Lauenburg Society for the collection and preservation of patriotic antiquities . However, he is primarily important as the author and editor of numerous writings and essays. Kähler was particularly committed to reforming the school system in Schleswig-Holstein and founded the quarterly magazine Schleswig-Holsteinisches Schulblatt in 1839 , for which he was responsible as editor of the first two years. He was also, together with Carl Peter Matthias Lüdemann , founder and editor of the Kirchliche Vierteljahrs-Schrift , which appeared in only one year in 1848 . In addition, between 1832 and 1861 he published several collections of sermons and practical writings on catechetics and religious education , with which he became known beyond Schleswig-Holstein and internationally. Posthumously a new edition of his Christian Doctrine was published based on Luther's little catechism , revised by his son Gregor Clemens Kähler . In the context of the theological debates of his time with Luther's Small Catechism , Kähler's work is considered to be the "most significant" of the direction that made "historical recourse" to other writings of Luther for the practical interpretation of the work.

All in all, Kähler cultivated an idiosyncratic, witty pointed style, in particular his articles in the Schleswig-Holstein school newspaper were considered "original" "in the spirit of Jean-Paul ."
