Karl Zittel

Karl Zittel (also: Carl Zittel ; born June 21, 1802 in Schmieheim ; † August 28, 1871 in Karlsruhe ) was a Protestant theologian and politician. He was one of the leading representatives of church liberalism in Baden .

Life

Zittel studied in Jena, where he became a member of the Jena fraternity in 1821 and of the Corps Saxonia Jena in 1822 . From 1834 he was pastor in Bahlingen , from 1849 in Heidelberg . From 1842 to 1851 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Baden Estates Assembly , where he gained notoriety in 1845 through his application in favor of religious freedom . In 1848 he was a member of the pre-parliament . Zittel represented the electoral district of Karlsruhe in the Frankfurt National Assembly from May 24, 1848 to May 30, 1849 , where he belonged to the casino faction . In 1850 he was a member of the Erfurt Union Parliament .

Later he was one of the founders of the Protestant Association and, together with Heinrich Eltester and Karl Hase, edited the edification book Der Sonntagabend, which was published from 1857 to 1864 .

From 1874 his son Emil Zittel was Dean in Karlsruhe and a member of the Baden General Synod . His son Karl Alfred von Zittel is considered to be the founder of scientific palaeontology .
