Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini , also Carlo Alberto Cavalchini (born July 26, 1683 in Tortona , † March 7, 1774 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

After initial home schooling, he attended the Jesuit school in Tortona and then studied at the University of Pavia , where he received his doctorate on July 24, 1702 as Doctor utriusque iuris . His father sent him to Rome so that he could perfect his legal knowledge there, among others with the then very well-known lawyer Del Corno .

As early as 1702 he was appointed to the lawyers' college of the city of Milan and was granted civil rights. In July 1716, the Milan Senate appointed him consistory attorney.

Cavalchini was ordained a priest on February 24, 1724 . He was appointed titular archbishop of Philippi on May 10, 1728. He received his episcopal ordination on June 6th, 1728 Pope Benedict XIII. ; Co-consecrators were Giuseppe Maria Feroni , Titular Archbishop of Damascus , and Bernardo Pizzella , Titular Bishop of Constantina .

Pope Benedict XIII appointed him in the consistory of September 9, 1743 cardinal priest of the titular church Santa Maria della Pace . On March 2, 1748, Cavalchini became Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and Regulars . From June 24th, 1752 to January 29th, 1753 he was Camerlengo of the Roman Church. He attended the conclave in 1758 , but his election as Pope was vetoed by the King of France, Louis XV. prevented. According to some sources, he is said to have already been elected, but resigned because of the veto. From July 15, 1758 until his death he was papal archivist .

On February 12, 1759 he was raised to the rank of cardinal bishop and received the suburbicarian diocese of Albano . In 1759 he became Commendatabbot of the Monastery of San Michele della Chiusa . He was appointed Bishop of Ostia and Velletri on May 16, 1763 ; at the same time he became cardinal dean . In this capacity he headed the conclave in 1769 , at which Clement XIV was elected Pope.

Carlo Alberto Guidobono Cavalchini died on March 7, 1774 at around three o'clock in the morning of fever and old age after receiving the sacraments .

His great-nephew Francesco was also appointed cardinal by Pius VII. In 1807 in pectore , although this was only announced a decade later in 1818 due to the circumstances of the time.
