biography

Carlo Pedini began his musical training as an autodidact before enrolling at the Conservatory in his hometown of Perugia. He studied with Fernando Sulpizi, among others, and took perfection courses with Franco Donatoni in Siena and with Salvatore Sciarrino in Città di Castello . He finished his studies at the Conservatory Rossini in Pesaro in the subjects of choral music and choral conducting (1981) and in Perugia in composition (1983). In addition, Pedini studied law at the University of Perugia, which he graduated in 1982. Since 1981 he has taught harmony at various state conservatories (including Avellino, Pesaro, Perugia) and devotes himself to painting in his free time.

Carlo Pedini has been awarded at various international competitions since 1980, including a. in Rome ( Concorso “Bucchi” ), Venice ( Concorso “Opera prima” ), Amsterdam ( “Gaudeamus” ), Bologna ( Concorso “2 Agosto” ). In 1993 he created the oratorio "Il Mistero Jacopone" , commissioned by the RAI , which was premiered in Turin by the RAI Symphony Orchestra under Karl Martin. Pedini is the creator of five operas, numerous symphonies, choral and chamber music and repeatedly receives commissions from major orchestras, concert organizers and festivals.

From 1988 to 1995 he was artistic director of the “Divertimenti musicali” in his hometown of Perugia; from 1996 to 2003 he was artistic director of the Sagra Musicale Umbra , the most important concert series of sacred music in Italy. This task enabled him to work with outstanding international musicians such as Ennio Morricone , Philip Glass and Leo Brouwer . 2001 saw the world premiere of Gustav Mahler's 10th Symphony in the version by G. Mazzuca and N. Samale with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Martin Sieghart.

From 2011 to 2016 he was President of the "Guido D'Arezzo" Foundation. He also engages in fine arts activities. Thanks to diverse interests, he published his debut novel "The Sixth Season" in 2012 with the Roman publisher Cavallo di Ferro, which was selected among the finalists of the LXVI edition of the Strega Prize. Based on the structure of Thomas Mann's novel "Buddenbrooks", "The Sixth Season" is a kind of "composition experiment" in which the author applies the rules of musical composition to the creation of a literary text.
