Carlos Suffern

Carlos Suffern (born September 25, 1901 in Luján , † May 31, 1991 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine composer.

Suffern had piano lessons with César Stiattesi at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Buenos Aires and continued his education in 1924 at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música y Declamación with Ernesto Drangosch (piano), Athos Palma , José André and Constantino Gaito . He was co-founder of the Mozarteum Argentino and twice (1949–1950 and 1970–1972) artistic director of the Teatro Colón . From 1953 he taught music history at the Conservatorio Nacional, whose vice rector he was 1964-1965.

As head of the music department of the Dirección General de Cultura de la Nación (1950–1954), he organized the performance of works by contemporary Argentine composers such as Roberto Caamaño , Rodolfo Arizaga , Marcelo Koc , Virtú Maragno , Antonio Tauriello and Carlos Tuxen-Bang . From 1964 to 1966 and from 1970 to 1980 he was President of the Argentine Composers Association, from 1972 to 1977 he was also President of the Consejo Argentino de la Música (CAMU) and from 1973 to 1977 of the Comité Latino Americano para la Música (CLAM).
