history

The present urban area was populated by whites in 1853. In 1877, the Missouri changed its course during a flood. The oxbow lake formed in the former river bed was called Lake Nakoma .

In 1892, the United States Supreme Court ruled in a lawsuit between the states of Iowa and Nebraska that the flood-west area of ​​the river still belongs to Iowa.

In 1908 the lake was renamed Carter Lake after a previous landowner . From 1892 to 1912, the Courtland Beach resort existed on the shores of the lake as a recreational area for wealthy citizens of neighboring Omaha.

In 1930 Carter Lake was incorporated as a separate municipality.
