Carter Lake is a city (with the status " City ") in Pottawattamie County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . Carter Lake had 3,785 residents in 2010 , which decreased to 3,766 by 2014.
Carter Lake is part of both sides of the Missouri in the states of Iowa and Nebraska situated metropolitan Omaha -Council Bluffs.

Carter Lake is the only city of Iowa west of the Missouri. The state of Nebraska borders the city on three sides. Today called Carter Lake , an oxbow lake from the Missouri, surrounds the city in the northwest, north and northeast.
The geographical coordinates of Carter Lake are 41 ° 17'26 "north latitude and 95 ° 55'05" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 5.23 km² and is part of the Kane Township .
The city center of Omaha , Nebraska's largest city, is located 11 km southwest of Carter Lake. The town of Council Bluffs is 7 miles southeast.

history
The present urban area was populated by whites in 1853. In 1877, the Missouri changed its course during a flood. The oxbow lake formed in the former river bed was called Lake Nakoma .
In 1892, the United States Supreme Court ruled in a lawsuit between the states of Iowa and Nebraska that the flood-west area of the river still belongs to Iowa.
In 1908 the lake was renamed Carter Lake after a previous landowner . From 1892 to 1912, the Courtland Beach resort existed on the shores of the lake as a recreational area for wealthy citizens of neighboring Omaha.
In 1930 Carter Lake was incorporated as a separate municipality.

According to the 2010 census , Carter Lake had 3,785 people in 1,388 households. The population density was 723.7 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.73 people in each of the 1388 households.
