Martyrdom of Cassian by Imola by Innocenzo di Pietro Francucci da Imola (around 1500)

Kassian (* in Rome (?); † August 13, 303 or 304 (according to other information: 363 ) in Forum Cornelii ( Imola ); also Cassianus , Kassian of Imola ) was a Christian martyr and saint .

Life

According to the tradition of the poet Prudentius, Kassian was a martyr of the 4th century, presumably of the Diocletian persecution of Christians . According to legend, Kassian is also said to have been bishop of Säben or Brescia , but this cannot be proven historically.

He was a schoolmaster in the northern Italian city of Imola and refused to worship the Roman gods in class. However, because he taught Christianity , he was sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out by his angry students (he had often physically punished), which him with iron styluses stabbed (see figure).

When his grave was opened in Imola in 2004, traces of traces were found on his skull that were associated with the martyrdom of the legend of the saints, which was taken as evidence of Kassian's identity.

Kassian is especially venerated in Tyrol . He is one of the diocesan patrons of the Diocese of Bozen-Brixen . In Brixen he is one of the patrons of the Brixen Cathedral and is considered the first bishop of Brixen. For other churches consecrated to him see Kassianskirche .

Kassian is also the patron saint of Imola and Mexico City and the patron saint of teachers and stenographers .

His feast day in the saints calendar is the day of his death, August 13th.
