Events
Politics and world events
Europe / Asia
- April 6th : The Roman Emperor Julian invades the Persian Empire with his legions as part of the largest military operation in all of late antiquity and, after a rapid advance, reaches the Sassanid capital Ctesiphon .
- June 22nd : In the course of the siege attempt of the Sassanid city Ctesiphon by Roman troops, the battle of Maranga takes place between the Roman Empire and the Sassanid Empire under Shapur II , which ends without a decision in the event of great losses on both sides.
- June 26th : A last attempt to revive the pagan cults through the connection with Neoplatonic ideas fails with the death of Emperor Julian, who falls under Shapur II during the campaign he initiated against the Sassanids. On the same day, a college made up of officers Nevitta , Arintheus , Victor and Dagalaifus agreed to proclaim the Christian Flavius Jovianus as the new emperor after the incumbent Praetorian prefect Saturninius Secundus Salutius had rejected it for reasons of age. The Persians take advantage of the situation and intensify the attacks on the retreating Roman legions.
- In a peace treaty with the Sassanids, Jovian leaves them five provinces as well as the important city of Nisibis . Even decades later, the treaty is seen by many Romans as a shameful peace, but it saves the Roman army from annihilation. The border between the two great empires, which had been constantly contested until then, will be pacified for the next 230 years or so.
religion
The Nisibis school is moved to Edessa , where it will remain until 489 .
