There are also conflicts in the religious field . Christological questions heat the minds while the argument between Arians and Orthodox continues to smolder. Constantius took the side of the Arians and had Athanasius , the leader of the Orthodox, condemned at the Synod of Arles . Athanasius had to spend the next few years underground, only Julian , the pagan-minded successor of Constantius, allowed him to return to Alexandria in 362 .
