Centenionalis of Magnentius
  • January 18 : The Roman general Magnentius appoints in Gallic Augustodunum to Gegenkaiser of Emperor Constans . The usurper receives support from troops in the western part of the Roman Empire and gives the order to kill Constans.
  • February: The Roman Emperor Constans is arrested and executed while fleeing from the usurper in Castrum Helenae , at the foot of the Pyrenees.
  • March 1st : The army master Vetranio has himself proclaimed anti-emperor in Sirmium , Pannonia.
Coin of Nepotianus
  • June 2 : The resistance of the Roman population against the city prefect Titianus appointed by Magnentius leads to Nepotianus being proclaimed anti -emperor.
  • June 29th : The revolt in Rome is put down by Magnentius' troops under Army Master Marcellinus . Nepotianus is killed and his head is carried through the streets on a lance. The following proscription also fell victim to Eutropia, the half-sister of Constantine the Great .
  • Constantius II , emperor in the eastern part of the empire, and the usurper Vetranio meet in Naissos . Vetranio is officially appointed emperor.
  • December: Vetranio has to give up the title of emperor by order of Emperor Constantius II.
