Damasus II , previously Poppo von Brixen (* presumably in Pildenau near Ering , Lower Bavaria ; † August 9, 1048 in Palestrina ), was Pope from July 17 to August 9, 1048. He is valid due to his origin and his proximity to the Salian emperor as a " German Pope ".

Life

Poppo von Brixen, nicknamed Baginarius (the Bavarian), came from the Bavarian noble family of Babones and was the son of Count Poppo II von Rott (or, according to other sources, the son of Bailiff Chuno of Benediktbeuern Monastery ). In the Liber Pontificalis he is referred to as natione Noricus, qui alio vocabulo Bayuuarius dicitur . He had been bishop of the diocese of Brixen since 1039 and as such took part in the synods of Pavia , Sutri and Rome in 1046/47 .

He was Christmas 1047 by Emperor Heinrich III. in Pöhlde against Benedict IX. destined to be Pope. Poppo was accompanied to Rome on imperial orders by an army of the Marquis of Tuscany, which had the order of Benedict IX. forcibly removed from Peter's chair . On July 16, 1048, Poppo was able to enter Rome with a Tuscan army and was ordained as Pope the next day . Benedict had already been driven from the papal throne the year before. However, after the death of Clemens II , whom he is said to have poisoned, he seized power again.

Poppo sat for 24 days as Damasus II on the chair of Peter before he died in Palestrina - presumably of malaria - although it is disputed whether he was supported by Benedict IX. was poisoned. He was buried in the basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura in Rome .

Damasus also kept the diocese of Brixen during his pontificate, to which he bequeathed a precious altar cloth ( pallam altaris optimam Brixinam misit ) according to the Brixen bishops' catalog from the early 15th century . Nothing is known about his short pontificate.
