Castanea henryi is a type of chestnut fromthe beech family .

features

Castanea henryi is a tree that reaches heights of up to 30 meters. The petiole is 1 to 2.5 inches long. The leaf blade is 10 to 23 centimeters long and oblong-ovate, oblong-lanceolate or lanceolate. The underside is covered with yellowish-brown, scale-like glands, has light hairs along the veins of young leaves and later becomes bald. The leaf base is rounded to broadly heart-shaped, but still narrowly wedge-shaped in young leaves. The leaf margin is covered with 2 to 4 millimeters large, bristle-like teeth. The tip of the leaf is pointed long. Male inflorescences are 5 to 16 inches tall. Female flowers are usually one, rarely two or three per fruit cup . The fruit cups are arranged in a short ear. The fruit cup, including the bracts, has a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. It is covered with thinly hairy and thorn-like bracts . There is one nut fruit per fruit cup . These have a diameter of 1.5 to 2 centimeters, are longer than they are wide and spherical-egg-shaped.

The species blooms from May to July and fruit from September to October.

Occurrence

Castanea henryi is endemic to China and can be found in the provinces of Anhui , Fujian , Guangdong , Guangxi , Guizhou , Henan , Hubei , Hunan , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Shaanxi , Sichuan , Yunnan and Zhejiang . The species grows in mesophytic mixed forests on mountain slopes at altitudes of 100 to 1800 m.

Systematics

The species was first described in 1899 by Sidney Alfred Skan as Castanopsis henryi and placed in the genus Castanea in 1916 by Alfred Rehder and Ernest Henry Wilson . Synonyms are Castanea sativa Miller var. Acuminatissima and Castanea vilmoriniana Dode .

A variety Castanea henryi var. Omeiensis W.P. Muzzle differed, in which there are star-shaped, downy hairs on young leaf blades and one to three nut fruits are present per fruit cup. This taxon may be a hybrid between Castanea henryi and Castanea mollissima .
