Cauterize ( engl. Etching ) is the second studio album by the American hard rock - / thrash metal band Tremonti . The album was released on June 5, 2015 via Fret12.

Emergence

Singer and guitarist Mark Tremonti started working on a new studio album in summer 2014. According to his own statement, the ideas just gushed out of him. In total, Mark Tremonti wrote 25 songs, which were reduced to 20 during the studio recording. In arranging the songs, Mark Tremonti was assisted by bassist Wolfgang Van Halen , who had been helping out with Tremonti as a live musician since 2012. The 20 songs were recorded in parallel and produced by Michael Baskette . During the recording a mixer was used that was used in the production of an album by Elvis Presley . In total, the band worked on the recordings for around three months. Originally the album was supposed to be called Providence , but Mark Tremonti decided at the last second after objections from his bandmates and his brother for Cauterize .

Initially, the release of a double album was planned, but the band rejected this plan again. Mark Tremonti stated in an interview that a double album would not have given each of these songs the attention it deserves. Instead, Mark Tremonti decided to release the albums with ten songs each. According to Tremonti, the two albums should be "as versatile and balanced as possible". In addition, the first album should not be stronger than the second. According to Mark Tremonti, it was difficult to hold back some of his favorite songs for a long time until the album Dust was released in the summer of 2016. As examples, he named the theme song Dust , My Last Mistake , Betray Me or Catching Fire .

According to Mark Tremonti, the songs on the album Cauterize described a science-fiction- like doomsday scenario . The songs on the album Dust , which was recorded at the same time, deal with its consequences. The theme song is about corrupt rulers. As examples, he cited countries like North Korea and Iran , which in his opinion are " ruled by tyrants and downright destroyed". As soon as one of these tyrants is gone, the next one would come. In the chorus , a huge science fiction figure rises from the sea and destroys evil.

Tie the Noose deals with the ubiquitous violence in the US. For example, there would be constant shootings, cities would burn, and police officers would be killed. The culprits in this situation would be right not matter and wrong, according to Tremonti. The song Flying Monkeys was given the title by Tremontis drum technician, who saw similarities between the guitar riff and the march of the flying monkeys from the score for The Wizard of Oz . Dark Trip is about a person with whom Mark Tremonti was close friends for years and then one day was betrayed by him.

Reviews

According to Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer “the ten new pieces rock and riff over long stretches in a rousing and ambitious way and prove that Tremonti is far from the end of his creativity with Alter Bridge ”. The title song would show that Mark Tremonti is "an accomplished songwriter and singer", for which Weckmann awarded five out of seven points. Holger Stratmann from the German magazine Rock Hard would shake Mark Tremonti "apparently effortlessly out of the sleeves of the top division riffs of the Pantera or Annihilator brand, only to switch to a big hard rock chorus with the appropriate accompaniment in the next moment". Stratmann rated the album 7.5 out of ten points.
