The single flower hornwort ( Cerastium uniflorum ) also called single flower hornwort , is a species of plant that belongs to the genus of horn herbs ( Cerastium ) within the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
The single-flowered hornwort is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 10 centimeters. It forms dense cushioned lawns with many sterile shoots. The opposite leaves are spatulate to ovate-lanceolate and hairy.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from June to September. The flower stalks are hairy. The hermaphroditic flowers with a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters are radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five free sepals are egg-shaped. The petals up to twice as long as the sepals. The five white petals are deeply cut.
The capsule fruit is curved and ten-toothed.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Occurrence
The single-flowered hornwort is widespread in the Central Alps , Carpathians and the Balkans . In Austria it occurs moderately to frequently and is absent in the federal states of Vienna , Burgenland and Lower Austria .
The single-flowered hornwort thrives best on low-lime , stony soils , rubble, rock, pioneer lawns . It occurs at altitudes from 1900 to 3400 m in the alpine to subnival altitudes . It grows in societies of the Androsacion alpinae association, but also occurs in other societies of the class Thlaspietea rotundifolii.
