The population of La Chapelle-Montabourlet (approx. 230) was included in the 1851 census . The continuous decline in population since the late 19th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

economy

The community is still largely agricultural, with viticulture , which was important in earlier times, only playing a subordinate role. Small traders, craftsmen and service providers have settled in the village.

history

The oldest mention of the place name Circulum comes from the year 1169; the church was built around the same time. In the years 1825 to 1877 the place formed an administrative unit together with the municipality of La Chapelle-Montabourlet . From January 1, 2017, the municipality of Cercles merged with the neighboring municipality of La Tour-Blanche to form Commune nouvelle La Tour-Blanche-Cercles .
