The Catholic parish church of St-Quentin in Brières-les-Scellés , a parish in the Essonne department in the French region of Île-de-France , dates back to a Romanesque church from the 11th century. The church is dedicated to Saint Quintinus , a martyr who lived in the 3rd century and who is said to have been martyred in the northern French city of Saint-Quentin named after him . In 1926 the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique .

history

The main nave was probably built in the late 11th century. The choir and the squat bell tower covered with a gable roof date from the second half of the 12th century. The aisle was probably renewed in the 15th century. The church is only documented in writing from the 15th century. In the 1980s, the church, which threatened to collapse, was completely renovated.

The interior has two aisles and is divided into five bays . The main nave is covered by a barrel vault made of chestnut wood, the narrower side aisle has a ribbed vault . The two eastern yokes are much higher. They widen to a transept on the south side and open into a recently closed choir and the Marienkapelle in the east. They are also covered by ribbed vaults that rest on columns with leaf capitals. The consoles of the vault ribs are partially provided with depictions of animals.
