history

Since 1753 the city was populated by whites. In 1789 the city was officially founded. The main street in the city, Franklin Street, was named after Benjamin Franklin . In 1968, a year after desegregation , Chapel Hill became the first southern town to elect an African American mayor despite the majority being white. Howard Lee was mayor from 1969 to 1975 and helped establish the Chapel Hill Transit, the urban bus system. In 1993 the city celebrated its 200th birthday and opened the Chapel Hill Museum. On February 10, 2015, the city hit the headlines because of the so-called “ Chapel Hill Shooting ”, in which three Muslims were murdered for no apparent reason.
