Charles A. Anderson

Charles Alfred "Andy" Anderson (born June 6, 1902 in Bloomington , California , † January 9, 1990 in Pomona , California) was an American geologist and petrographer .

Anderson earned a bachelor's degree from Pomona College in 1924 and a Ph.D. in 1928. at the University of California, Berkeley , where he subsequently became a faculty member and was appointed professor in 1938. In 1942 he moved to the US Geological Survey , in 1953 he took over the management of the department for mineral deposits. From 1959 to 1964, Anderson was the chief geologist of the US Geological Survey. He retired in 1972 but still worked as a consultant for the University of California, Santa Cruz .

Anderson was able to investigate anomalies in the copper deposits . He studied Precambrian volcanic rocks in Arizona and magmatic and metamorphic rocks in general . Anderson also tried to explain the origin of the Gulf of California . The mineral andersonite , which he found near Baghdad ( Iraq ) in 1951, is named after him.

Anderson was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1956 and a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1957 . In 1959 he was Vice President and in 1968 President of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), whose Penrose Gold Medal he was awarded in 1974. In 1960 he received an honorary doctorate from Pomona College.

Charles A. Anderson had been married to Helen Anderson, née Argall, since 1927, and the couple had one son.
