LaGrange is located in southwest Penobscot County and borders Piscataquis County . Several rivers flow through the town in a southerly direction. LaGrange was organized as an independent town on February 21, 1832. Previously, the area belonged to the Hammond Plantation and the Oxford Plantations. The southern part originally belonged to Hammond Plantation and was previously called Township No. 2 Old Indian Purchase, West of Penobscot River (T2 OIP WPR). On a map it was also named Township No. 1, Second Range, on another map Township No. 2, called Second Range.
