Charles Austin (musician)

Charles Austin (* 1930 in Miami ) is an American multi-instrumentalist of the modern creative ( tenor , alto and soprano saxophone , oboe , English horn , flute ).

Austin received a saxophone from his uncle when he was thirteen, initially for medical reasons. He was so enthusiastic about the instrument that he became a musician; He received his training from Howard Brubeck, among others . As a teenager he toured with BB King . Then he led his own quartet, which also appeared on Ed Sullivan 's show. After teaching at Tennessee State University , he returned to his hometown to raise a family.

Joe Gallivan brought him to his Modern Jazz Orchestra in the mid-1960s . In a duo with Gallivan, he performed in 1968 at the Miami Pop Festival between Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention . In A Train of Thought , the first electronic big band, he accompanied Marvin Gaye ; he is also involved in the albums Mindscapes and Expressions to the World . 1975 saw the first duo record with Gallivan, At Last . The duo performed worldwide over the next few decades. He also recorded with the French pianist and film composer Jean Schwarz . There was also a collaboration with James Brown and Stevie Wonder .

Austin also works as a music educator in Miami.
