Charles Korvin
Charles Korvin , actually Géza Korvin Kárpáthy (born November 21, 1907 in Pöstyény , Austria-Hungary , today Piešťany Slovakia , † June 18, 1998 in Manhattan , New York ) was an American actor .
Life
Korvin studied at the Sorbonne . He initially worked as a director of documentaries and as a cameraman . In 1937 he moved to the USA. He trained as an actor at the Barter Theater in Abingdon , Virginia . He made his Broadway debut in 1943 under the name Geza Korvin in the play Dark Eyes by Elena Miramova and Eugenie Leontovich . In 1965 he appeared again on Broadway in the comedy Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon . He took over the role of Victor Velasco from Kurt Kasznar .
After signing a film deal with Universal Pictures , he changed his name to Charles Korvin. He made his film debut in 1944 in the title role of the daring French master thief Arsène Lupine in the crime film Enter Arsene Lupine , where he benefited from his “good looks and continental charm”. In the following years he first played romantic heroes and lovers, in the following three films alongside Merle Oberon . After contract disputes - Korvin was supposed to take on a rogue role, but refused - his contract with Universal Studios was dissolved in 1947.
Korvin then worked as a freelance actor for other film studios, including Columbia Pictures , Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox , where he was partially used as a villain and villain. In 1951 he was put on the blacklist of Hollywood actors at the instigation of the Committee for Un-American Activities ; according to his family, he had refused to cooperate with the committee. Even so, Korvin was able to continue working as an actor outside of Hollywood. Later he often played supporting roles . In 1965, director Stanley Kramer cast him as ship captain Thiele in his film The Ship of Fools .
In addition to movies, Korvin also starred in TV films and numerous television series . He played the main role of the Interpol inspector Paul Duval in the American television series Here Interpol . His main episode role as Latin lover and dance teacher Mr. Sanchez in the episode Momma Loves a Mambo from the US series The Honeymooners will also be remembered . In the US miniseries Holocaust - The Story of the White Family , he played the role of Dr. Kohn from the Judenrat in Warsaw .
He became a US citizen in 1957. He died in Manhattan at the age of 90.
