Charles Owens (saxophonist, 1939)

Charles M. Owens (born May 4, 1939 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American jazz musician ( English horn , oboe , bassoon , clarinet , saxophone ) and music teacher. He is also known as Charles M. Brown .

Owens played in the bands of Buddy Rich , Mongo Santamaría , Bobby Bryant , Henry Franklin , Patrice Rushen , Gerald Wilson , James Newton ( Water Mystery , 1985), John Carter , Horace Tapscott , Frank Zappa (1972), in the Duke Ellington Orchestra and in the Clayton / Hamilton Jazz Orchestra . As a session musician, he participated in the recordings of Marvin Gaye , Dave Grusin , Eddie Harris , Gladys Knight and Barbra Streisand . In 1978 Discovery Records released his debut album The Two Quartets (with Teddy Saunders, John Heard and Alex Acuña , among others ); In 1980 the album New York Art Ensemble Plays the Music of Harry Warren followed , on which Ray Brown , George Cables and Roy McCurdy participated. As a music teacher he held private tuition for many years and founded Wind College with James Newton, Red Callender and John Carter in 1981 ; he also worked on the Jazz in Schools program of the Los Angeles Jazz Society.

Charles Owens should not be confused with the saxophonist Charles Owens , born in 1972, of the same name .
