Sir Charles Taylor du Plat KCB (* July 1823 in Altona , Duchy of Holstein , † November 2, 1900 in Ashley , Hampshire , Great Britain ) was a Royal British Major General and stable master of Queen Queen Victoria .

Life

He came from the French noble family du Plat , whose first representative in Germany was Pierre Joseph du Plat (1657–1709), the progenitor of the Hanoverian line. Members of this German line again entered royal Danish and British services. Du Plat was the son of the British Royal Major General George Gustavus Charles William du Plat (1796-1854) and the Pauline Countess von Hardenberg (1800-1876).

Du Plat did his military training at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich . He then came to the Royal Artillery in 1841 and served there for about four decades. In June 1842 he was promoted from Second Lieutenant to First Lieutenant and was stationed in Malta in December 1845 . At the end of June 1854, the Second Captain was promoted to First Captain , on April 23, 1860 to Major , later to Lieutenant Colonel and on March 7, 1867 to Colonel . In 1880 he was retired to the rank of major general with a full pension .

Since he was hired as captain on February 22, 1854 as stable master of the British Prince Consort Albert , he had close ties to the royal court for 46 years. After the death of the Prince Consort (1861) du Plat was equerry ( Equerry in Ordinary ) and from October 1, 1893 until his death chief equerry ( Extra Equerry ) of Queen Victoria.

In his first marriage du Plat married on May 1, 1855 Maria Christina Dalyell († April 7, 1867), the daughter of Captain Sir William Dalyell, 7th Baronet (1787-1865), and Maria Sampayo († 1871). It was not until 30 years after the death of his first wife that he married Ann Forbes , daughter of JS Forbes , in 1897 . In 1881 he was widowed again and lived at 2 Carlisle Place, London, Middlesex . Most recently he lived in Ashley (Hampshire), where he also died in 1900.

Having to Companion of the already on April 15, 1884 Bath Order had been appointed, he was on 28 February 1896 accolade for Knight Commander of the Bath Order of the British peerage charged with the suffix "Sir".
