Chauffeur Antoinette is a love comedy from 1931 by Herbert Selpin , which was the first to be staged. Charlotte Ander and Hans Adalbert Schlettow play the leading roles. The story was based on a play by Robert Blum based on a novel by Jean de Létraz and Suzette Desty.

action

Antoinette Peterson is a pretty young woman, already widowed but very dynamic, well-off and active in sports. She even had her own driver's license and car, which was quite unusual for women at the time. One day she speculates on a deal and is broke in no time. Antoinette even has to sell her mansion and the vehicle. When one day she meets a man on the road whose vehicle has broken down, Antoinette is able to help him and fix the problem. She does not know that the stranger to her is a certain William P. Harrison, through whose speculation she has lost all of her fortune. They meet again soon after, because Harrison is also the buyer of their house. He offers the now jobless and capitalless Antoinette a job as his driver. Miss Peterson becomes chauffeur Antoinette.

There is also a bet connected with this new job: If Antoinette will do her driver's job for him for three months without any problems, he will show himself ready to repay her lost assets to her. From then on, the speculator does everything possible to prevent Antoinette from winning the bet, but she is smarter and makes no mistakes. In the end, he has to admit without hesitation that she did her job flawlessly, and since they have both fallen in love in the meantime, they can start their life together without finances playing a role.

Production notes

Chauffeur Antoinette was created in the Jofa studios in Berlin-Johannisthal between September 9 and 23, 1931 and was premiered on January 15, 1932 in Berlin's atrium cinema.

Co-producer Hans Friedländer also took over the production management. The musical arrangement of the compositions by Ralph Benatzky was in the hands of Fritz Freed. Erich Czerwonski created the film structures. Eugen Klagemann took the still photos. Hermann Birkhofer and Eugen Hrich took care of the sound.

From Chauffeur Antoinette , a French-language version under the title was Conduizez-moi, madame shot with purely French performers. This version was launched in Paris in mid-November 1932. The English version was called The Love Contract and had all-English actors. Both versions were also staged by Selpin.
