Chedwyn Michael "Ched" Evans (born December 28, 1988 in Saint Asaph ) is a Welsh football player . The Welsh international gained international fame after receiving a long prison sentence in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old girl in 2011 . The judgment was overturned on April 21, 2016 by the Court of Appeal and a new hearing has been scheduled. After his early release in October 2014, the striker was initially looking for a club until he signed with Chesterfield FC in June 2016 after the judgment was overturned . He has been under contract with Sheffield United again since 2017 .

Career

In the club

Evans began playing football in 1999 in the youth club of Rhyl FC in Denbighshire , the club in his hometown. After only a year he moved to the youth of Chester City , where he was active for two years. In 2002 he joined the youth academy of the Premier League club Manchester City , where he played for the youth teams until 2007.

In May 2007 Evans signed his first professional contract with the Citizens and was included in the professional squad for the 2007/08 season . After Evans made his first appearance in the professional team in the 1-0 win over Norwich City in the League Cup in September , he was initially not considered by coach Sven-Göran Eriksson . To get match practice he moved in November 2007 on loan to Norwich City in the Championship . Just a week after his move, he played his first league game for Norwich in a 3-1 win over Blackpool FC . In his third game, a 2-1 win over Plymouth Argyle , he also scored his first goal for Norwich. After eight missions and two hits, the loan deal ended in January 2008. However, both clubs were able to agree on an extension of the loan contract until the end of the season, so that Evans came up in twenty more games and scored eight more goals.

For the Premier League season 2008/09 Evans returned to Manchester City and made his Premier League debut on August 17 when he was in the starting line-up in the 2-4 loss to Aston Villa . In his third league game he was able to mark his first goal in England's elite league. As a result, Evans was regularly used in both the league and the UEFA Cup . However, as Manchester signed well-known strikers with Craig Bellamy , Roque Santa Cruz , Carlos Tévez and Emmanuel Adebayor , Evans decided to leave the club.

In July 2009, he moved to the Championship for Sheffield United for about £ 3million and signed a three-year deal. After good performances at the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Evans fell into a low performance and was rarely first choice. So he came in his first season for Sheffield on only four hits in 33 league and three cup appearances. In his second season for the Blades he got into better shape, but still fell short of the high expectations - he scored nine goals in 35 competitive games - and was relegated to League One at the end of the season with Sheffield . In England's third division, Evans was finally able to use his potential and scored regularly for his club, both in the league and in the cup competitions. By April 14, 2012 he had 35 hits in 42 compulsory games and was second on the top scorer list.

After he was sentenced to five years in prison for rape on April 20, he had to take a break from his professional career. Sheffield made it to the final of the play-offs for re-promotion, but failed there with 7: 8 on penalties to Huddersfield Town . Evans contract expired in the summer, making him officially without a club.

Evans has been looking for a club since his early release in October 2014. When an impending engagement became known, voices within and outside of the respective club have since been heard that could prevent Evans from being committed. In chronological order, these were the lower class clubs Sheffield United, Hartlepool United , Oldham Athletic and Grimsby Town .

On June 20, 2016 Evans signed a one-year contract with League One club Chesterfield FC . He then moved to Sheffield United.

In the national team

Evans made his debut for the Welsh U-19s in 2006 and made four games by 2007, in which he scored one goal. In the same year he made his debut for the U-21 national team , for which he scored 13 goals in 13 games within two years. In 2008 Evans made his debut for the senior team when he scored the 1-0 winner with a hoe in a friendly against Iceland on May 28 . In twelve other internationals until his conviction he remained goalless.

Personal

Ched Evans was sentenced to five years in prison on April 20, 2012 . He is said to have raped a 19-year-old woman in a hotel in Rhyl , Welsh on the night of May 29th to 30th, 2011 . In response to Evans' conviction, the victim's name was broadcast on Twitter , thereby targeting the reputation of the victim . As a result, the victim left his place of residence and changed his name.

Evans was released early on October 17, 2014 for good conduct.

The Court of Appeal ruled in April 2016 that the inclusion of further testimony in the proceedings against Evans was permissible and therefore ordered the previous judgment to be set aside and the trial to be rescheduled. A jury at the Crown Court in Cardiff found Evans unanimously not guilty of rape in 2011 in the new trial on October 14, 2016.
