Chenanson

Chenanson is a red wine variety . It is a French new breed by Paul Truel of INRA Montpellier (Institut national de la recherche agronomique), which was created in 1958 from a cross between the grape varieties Grenache x Jurançon Noir. The variety received plant variety protection in 1978 and was added to the variety list in 1985 .

Chenanson is in the department of Aude , Bouches-du-Rhône , Gard , Hérault , Pyrénées-Orientales , Var and Vaucluse admitted. Planted areas (539 hectares of vineyards were registered in 2008 ) are currently in the departments of Gard, Hérault and Aude. After initially great success, the area under vines has been declining again for several years.

The high-yielding variety produces structured, deep dark wines with a medium alcohol content. It is suitable for the development of dry red wines . It is ideally suited to dry and hot locations.
