action

Eighteen-year-old Angelina, along with her best friend Andrew, flees her hometown and from her family, which consists of her little sister, her alcoholic mother and her abusive stepfather. Angelina and Andrew, who is secretly in love with her, rent a room in San Francisco . She starts working in a night club. There Angelina meets the lawyer Francis, with whom she starts a relationship. She suffers from the separation from her sister, who, according to her mother, does not want to talk to Angelina.

Angelina, who has already made money with nude photos in the past, meets the porn director and actress Margaret and begins to appear in porn films on the side . To do this, she takes the pseudonym Cherry. At first she shot masturbation scenes, later also scenes with other women. Margaret, meanwhile, falls in love with her. This destroys Margaret's relationship with her long-time partner Jillian.

During an unannounced visit to San Francisco, her mother asks Angelina for financial support, allegedly to treat her little sister's stomach problems. However, Angelina later explains that everything is okay with her stomach and that she wants to leave the family soon. Angelina advises her sister to finish high school first .

Finally, Angelina begins to have sex with men in front of the camera as well. Francis does not agree with this. It comes to an argument and as a result to a car accident, which Angelina survives slightly injured. Earlier than expected at home caught there Andrew in how he is one of their porn film satisfies itself . She then declares that she can no longer live with him and leaves the apartment.

In a bar she meets Margaret, with whom she starts a lesbian relationship. The last scene of the film shows Cherry directing a pornographic film.

background

San Francisco Armory

While the film does not tell the life story of Lorelei Lee, it is based in part on the scriptwriters' experiences. Lorelei Lee had been working as a porn actress and director for more than ten years when the script was written. Elliott also has contacts in the porn industry.

One of the locations was the San Francisco Armory . The company Kink.com , for which Lorelei Lee works, is based there.

reception

The film was largely poorly received by the critics. The New York Times reviewer thought the film was well performed, but criticized the uncritical view of the porn industry. The acting performances of Heather Graham as Margaret and Lili Taylor as the alcoholic mother of Angelina, but above all the relatively unknown leading actress Ashley Hinshaw, were also highlighted by James Berardinelli in a review for the Reelviews website . Berardinelli found the portrayals of James Franco and Dev Patel less good. Berardinelli sees a great weakness in the only superficially worked out relationships between the main characters. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper also commented negatively on this. He found none of the love affairs in the film to be convincing other than Andrew's admiration for Cherry.

criticism

"Relevant ingredients of the C-Trash film are raised halfway to B-level with prominent actors and an accomplished director."
