From mid-August 1949 she ran a kiosk on the corner of Kant and Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse , in which she created the “Special Curry Bratwurst” on September 4, 1949, which became “Currywurst” in the mid-1950s. Herta Heuwer also ran a fast-food parlor at Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse 57 and later a snack bar with up to 19 shop assistants. On January 21, 1959, on her application dated February 21, 1958, the word / figurative mark “Chillup” was registered under the number 721319 as a trademark for “special sauce” in the trademark roll of the German Patent Office . Olaf Böhme, husband of Herta Heuwer's niece and foster daughter Brigitte Böhme, had an essentially identical brand for “sauce spéciale, épices”, initially for Switzerland and then, in accordance with the Madrid Agreement on the International Registration of Brands , for Protect Austria , Germany and Liechtenstein . In 2006, this brand was also registered in Germany for “sausages, especially curry sausages”, “rental of historical documents, historical tablets and photos as well as collected press reports on the subject of currywurst for museums” and “catering for guests”.

On the day before Herta Heuwer's 90th birthday in 2003, the district mayor Monika Thiemen posthumously unveiled a plaque designed by Reinhard Jacob on a part of the building at Kantstrasse 101 and Kaiser-Friedrich-Strasse 57 . In addition to the Böhme couple, Brigitte Grothum , leading actress in the television series Drei Damen vom Grill , also took part in the ceremony.

Herta Heuwer is often referred to as the inventor of today's currywurst because of the registration of the “Chillup” brand, to which a separate room was dedicated in the now closed Berlin Currywurst Museum . In contrast, the cultural historian Petra Foede assumes that several Berlin sausage sellers were involved in the development of the currywurst, who looked for a replacement for the ketchup, which was not available in the early post-war period , with various spice mixtures .

The writer Uwe Timm wants to remember eating his first currywurst in Hamburg as early as 1947 . The Lena Brücker presented in his novella The Discovery of Currywurst as the inventor of the Currywurst is fictional. She is supposed to embody the generation of women who shaped Germany in the post-war period: “Lena Brücker is one of those wonderful women, of whom there were many. They did most of the reconstruction, they were very present at the time. "

On the 70th anniversary of the invention of the currywurst, the Berlin State Mint issued a commemorative medal in honor of Herta Heuwer.
